Georgian Opposition Threatens President with Impeachment for Refusing US Military Base

OREANDA-NEWS. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who called it impractical to build an American military base in the country, could face impeachment. Such words were made on Wednesday by Tinatin Bokuchava, a member of the Georgian parliament from the opposition United National Movement party. “I am convinced day by day that this woman [Zurabishvili] will surely end her activity with impeachment. However, now it’s important that before the impeachment she doesn’t cause irreparable damage to the country before such an attack,” Bokuchava told reporters.
Secretary General of the ruling party "Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia", Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze believes that relations between Georgia and the United States are friendly and the construction of the base at this stage is not being considered. “America has always been, is and will be our strategic partner and friend. It always stands next to our country after independence. All decisions will be made as a result of negotiations. At this stage there was no talk on this particular topic,” Kaladze quotes Channel One. In an interview with the Georgian editorial office of the Voice of America radio station Zurabishvili, published on Wednesday night, she said that the construction of an American military base in Georgia is inexpedient and can be interpreted as a provocation. According to her, Georgia should deepen relations with the United States, but not take steps that will provoke other countries.
Georgia and the United States are bound by the Charter on Strategic Partnership, drawn up in 2009. Tbilisi has been intensively cooperating with NATO since 1994 and has repeatedly declared its desire to join the alliance. In August 2015, the Joint Training and Evaluation Center Georgia-NATO opened at the military base in Krtsanisi near Tbilisi.
