Georgian Opposition Announces new Protests in Tbilisi
The opposition demands the resignation of Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze and the replacement of the majoritarian electoral system with a proportional one, added the leader of the European Georgia party Giga Bokeria. On the eve of June 20, mass protests took place in Tbilisi, which began after the incident with the participation of State Duma deputy Sergei Gavrilov. Gavrilov is the president of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (this association was created at the initiative of Greece in 1993 and should promote the adoption of laws in the member countries that are in the interests of Orthodoxy). And in the capital of Georgia on Thursday held a meeting of the organization.
Deputy Gavrilov began the meeting sitting in the chair of the speaker of the Georgian parliament. His speech was interrupted by local opposition deputies from the United National Movement and European Georgia, who demanded that the Russian delegation leave the parliament. According to the members of “European Georgia”, Russia is an occupant and its representative shouldn't conduct the meeting. Gavrilov, under guard, was taken out of the building, he flew to Russia.
After that, a rally began at the parliament building, the participants of which demanded the resignation of Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze and the appointment of early parliamentary elections. The rally with the help of water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets was eventually dispersed by the police. According to the latest data of the Ministry of Health of Georgia, as a result of clashes with the police, 52 people were injured. Among them - 14 civilians and 38 police officers.
