France Calls on US to Waive Sanctions in Response to Digital Tax

OREANDA-NEWS. The head of the French Ministry of Finance, Bruno Le Mer, urged the US authorities to be mindful and abandon the idea of setting duties on French goods in response to the introduction of a digital tax. He made such a statement on Monday on the radio station France Inter.
"No one needs a trade war, so I urge our American friends to be wise, to be mind-bogged and work on a digital tax compromise within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)", said Le Mer.
He noted that "the digital tax imposed by France affects all digital giants, not just American ones". "Therefore, I reject the allegations that it's discriminatory", the minister said. "Today I’ll talk on the phone with my American colleague Stephen Mnuchin to warn against the logic of sanctions", the minister said.
Paris, he said, doesn't want a trade war, but "if the US decides to go all the way and imposes sanctions, France will respond to that". Le Mayor emphasized that in this case, Paris would "immediately turn to the WTO".
