OREANDA-NEWS Finland may open the border with Russia when the security situation changes, Interior Minister Marie Rantanen said on Friday.

"The crossing points (on the border with Russia – ed.) may open when the security authorities assess that this is possible," she said at a press conference. The broadcast was conducted by the public broadcaster Yle.

The Finnish parliament on Friday approved a bill to restrict the admission of refugees and their expulsion. The Finnish authorities have previously stated that the adoption of this law will allow further consideration of the issue of opening a checkpoint on the border with Russia.

Finnish authorities have repeatedly accused Russia of allegedly purposefully sending asylum seekers to the border. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova rejected accusations against Moscow of involvement in the migration crisis in the European Union, calling them double standards of the West.

The border between Finland and Russia is closed by Helsinki's decision until further notice. Finland began imposing restrictions on border crossings in November 2023 amid an uncontrolled flow of refugees from third countries. The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the closure of the Finnish checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation, noted that the Russophobic position, which the leaders of Finland have now begun to adhere to, is deeply regrettable. Peskov stressed that Russian border guards comply with all instructions, those who have a legitimate right to do so use the border crossing, and far-fetched accusations are unacceptable to Moscow.
