OREANDA-NEWS. The emergency summit of the heads of state and government of the European Union, which began on Sunday and is still ongoing, has become the longest for at least the last 15 years, the Russian media reports from the scene. This meeting, at which EU leaders are trying to agree on the candidacy for the post of head of the European Commission, broke the previous record set at the summit in 2015, when Greece’s very membership in the eurozone was questionable, and the third program of macro-financial assistance to Greece was confirmed and confirmed budget savings policy for this country.
Then, the summit began on July 12, 2015 and lasted 17 hours - until 10 am on July 13. The current meeting, which opened around 4:00 pm (5:00 pm Moscow time) on Sunday, has lasted for almost 18 hours and is still not completed. The absolute record of the duration of the EU summits belongs to the summit in Nice 2000, when the leaders of another 15 countries of the community were discussing the reform of the basic documents of the EU on the eve of receiving 10 countries of Central and Eastern Europe (May 2004). Then the summit dragged on for 4 days - from 7 to 11 December 2000, but none of its sessions lasted more than 15 hours without a break.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Head of the European Council Donald Tusk, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Head of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi, Chairman of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani are at stake. All these politicians have already announced that they are leaving their posts. The powers of all, with the exception of Tayani, expire on October 31. The mandate of the head of the European Parliament terminates from the first session of the European Parliament of the new convocation (elected May 23-26), which will be held July 2-4 in Strasbourg.
As expected, the summit, which began on Sunday, is extremely difficult. Moreover, there is a high probability that the leaders won't be able to reach an agreement and decide to convene another summit.
