OREANDA-NEWS. European Union Foreign and Security Policy Representative Josep Borrel criticized the decision of US President Donald Trump to suspend Washington's financing of the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Deeply regret US decision to suspend funding to @WHO. There is no reason justifying this move at a moment when their efforts are needed more than ever to help contain & mitigate the #coronavirus pandemic. Only by joining forces we can overcome this crisis that knows no borders”, Borrell wrote on Twitter. The crisis can only be defeated by joint efforts, said the representative of the EU.

Trump several times threatened to stop funding the organization, which is a UN body. The president of the United States blames the spread of the new coronavirus. He announced the decision to stop contributions on April 14.

Trump's decision was condemned by his political opponents from the US Democratic Party. Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy likened the denial of funding to depriving an ally of a weapon before attacking an enemy.
