Court Abolishes ExxonMobil Fine for Violation of Sanctions Against Russia
The court ruled that the US authorities did not give the company enough time in 2014 to terminate contracts with Rosneft, which violated the sanctions imposed by the Barack Obama administration. An ExxonMobil counterclaim alleges that the corporation was unlawfully fined for doing business with Rosneft, which was not sanctioned, and restrictive measures were taken only by the head and chairman of the company's board of directors, Igor Sechin.
Exxon said that a misinterpretation of President Barack Obama’s order in 2014 violates the Administrative Procedure Act. “ExxonMobil recognizes the court decision. The company confirms that it has complied with all sanctions”, the company said in a statement. Rosneft’s Executive Director Igor Sechin was put on the US Treasury sanctions list on April 28, 2014, and ExxonMobil’s Rosneft agreements were concluded from May 14 to 23, 2014.
