Collins Dictionary Named Lockdown the Word of the Year
OREANDA-NEWS. The popular Collins Dictionary of English language called the Word of the Year lockdown, defined as “the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces”. This was reported by BBC television channel. It is noted that this word was chosen due to the fact that the situation associated with the coronavirus pandemic has united billions of people around the world.
It is added that the Word of the Year could also be coronavirus, key worker, “an employee in any of a number of professions considered to be essential to the functioning of society”, furlough, “a temporary laying-off of employees, usually because there is insufficient work to occupy them”, self-isolate and social distancing.
Last year, Collins Dictionary named the Word of the Year climate strike, meaning a phenomenon that has become popular thanks to the actions of the Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg.
