China has developed an innovative way to fight cancer

OREANDA-NEWS China has developed a new antitumor therapy that triggers a powerful immune response in the body, similar to rejection of a transplanted organ. The study is published in the journal Cell.
Scientists from Guangxi University have injected a modified virus into tumors that makes cancer cells look like pig cells. The immune system immediately recognized them as foreign and began actively destroying them. This effect is achieved by the α1.3GT gene, which is responsible for the protein that causes the rejection reaction familiar to transplant doctors.
The clinical trials involved 23 patients with advanced forms of cancer that could not be treated. In 90 percent of cases, tumor growth stopped or declined, and one patient with cervical cancer went into complete remission.
The virus was administered intravenously and acted systemically, while it did not cause severe side effects and did not damage healthy cells. According to experts, the therapy destroyed the tumor's vessels, caused massive cell death and triggered a strong immune response.
The authors believe that the method opens up a new direction in oncology: the transformation of tumors into "foreign tissue" that the body itself will reject. The second phase of testing is currently being prepared.
