Canadian Parliament Recognized the Events in Ukraine as Genocide
OREANDA-NEWS The House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the events in Ukraine as genocide, CBC reports. According to the document, there is «clear and sufficient evidence of systematic and massive war crimes and crimes against humanity» in the course of Russia's actions in Ukraine. The resolution is not binding and does not oblige Ottawa to take any measures.
«The resolution demonstrates that the conflict in Ukraine is not over, that the support we provide is not enough, and we need to do more for the people of Ukraine», said the initiator of the resolution, MP from the New Democratic Party Heather McPherson.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden, during a meeting with journalists, said that what is happening in Ukraine seems to him to be genocide. At the same time, he noted that lawyers should give an assessment of what is happening. However, the official representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, said that the organization does not have data confirming the commission of genocide during a special operation in Ukraine.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the president's statement on the genocide is not capable of damaging the prospects for peace talks and does not affect Washington's position on resolving the crisis. According to her, the American administration will always support the Ukrainian authorities in negotiating efforts.
American intelligence also reported that it could not confirm the words of the US president, since it did not observe the destruction of an ethnic group or nation characteristic of genocide. The fact that what is happening cannot be considered genocide was also stated by the Secretary of State at the French Foreign Ministry, Clement Bon, who clarified that in this case there is an illegal use of the term.
