OREANDA-NEWS. A ceasefire in Syria is a good sign, but it still needs to start working, it is also a condition for sending humanitarian aid to Syria. This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel on Friday at the arrival at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Zagreb.
"The ceasefire agreement is a good sign and a manifestation of goodwill. Now we need to see how it will work. This agreement is a prerequisite for sending additional humanitarian assistance to Syria", he said. Borrel didn't answer the question of journalists whether he supports the proposal of the Netherlands to introduce a no-fly zone over Idlib.
Borrel also reiterated that the EU "should improve relations with Russia and Turkey to solve many problems". According to him, the ministers will consider on Friday the possibility of providing Turkey with additional assistance to keep refugees on its territory, but stressed that Ankara cannot use migrants to pressure the EU.
Starting March 15, the Russian Federation and Turkey will begin joint patrols along the M4 highway, along which a security corridor will be created. Moscow and Ankara reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the sovereignty of Syria and agreed to continue the decisive fight against terrorism.
