Berlin Called Moscow's Retaliatory Sanctions Unreasonable
OREANDA-NEWS. As the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Christopher Burger said, the official Berlin called unjustified Moscow's sanctions against German and French officials. He added that the German side does not consider "this step by Russia to be justified."
The imposition of restrictions on European officials was Russia's response to the sanctions adopted against it after the incident with the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. On the eve, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Germany had become the "leader in the confrontation" between Europe and Russia. He also promised that Moscow would give a mirror response to the restrictions imposed by the EU on Russians.
Another official representative of the FRG government, Steffen Seibert, noted that the German authorities took note of these statements by Russia on sanctions.
According to the German diplomat, "Russia has everything to investigate this crime." Seibert claims that a nerve agent was used against Navalny. Such actions violate the chemical weapons convention and international law in general.
However, according to Seibert, instead of investigating this crime, the Russian Foreign Minister announced his intention to impose sanctions on officials of other states. In the opinion of the German side, such a step from the point of view of the federal government, of course, is unjustified and disproportionate.
