OREANDA-NEWS The SCO summit in Astana began with the signing of documents on the admission of Belarus to the organization, as reported by RIA Novosti.
"Dear Heads of State, a decision has been made on the full membership of the Republic of Belarus in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation," said President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan.
He then congratulated President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus.
"In a short period of time, your country has completed all necessary procedures for full membership in the SCO," added Tokayev.
Lukashenko assured that Minsk would make every effort to enhance the prestige and number of allies in the organisation. He noted that partners in the SCO already have mutually beneficial projects in areas such as energy, transport, logistics, finance, and industrial cooperation.
"If we establish clear rules for our cooperation, everyone will benefit, including those outside the region of responsibility of the SCO," said Lukashenko. The Belarusian President also emphasized the importance of building a genuine and indivisible global security. He stressed that the initiative for this should come from the countries of the majority, as the narcissistic and selfish West has not been able to take the lead in this regard. There are currently no leaders in the West who can make responsible decisions on their own, according to Lukashenko.
Belarus will work to adapt its initiatives to be more relevant to its partners. The SCO Summit, taking place on July 3-4, will focus on "Strengthening Multilateral Dialogue - Striving for Sustainable Peace and Development." Participants are expected to sign 24 joint documents and adopt a final declaration, reaffirming the commitment of members to the principles of good-neighborliness and unity.
