OREANDA-NEWS Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that Belarus and the Russian Federation will cope with any challenges if they work together.

"We will cope with any challenges and problems if we work together," the president said on Monday in Minsk during a meeting with the governor of the Smolensk Region of the Russian Federation Vasily Anokhin.

Lukashenko noted that before the meeting he wondered what could divide Belarusians and residents of Smolensk region in general, what they are not like. "We have a common history, a common present. I am absolutely convinced that we should have a common future," the Belarusian president stressed.

At the same time, he stated that he does not adhere to the position that "everyone must necessarily be united into some kind of state or association." However, Lukashenko expressed the opinion that in the future, perhaps, a person will not care where he lives, he will be a man of peace. "In the meantime, the situation is developing in such a way that there is Belarus, there is Russia, there are (Belarusian - ed.) regions - Mogilev, Gomel, Vitebsk (bordering the Russian Federation - ed.), and there are (Russian, bordering Belarus - ed.) - Smolensk, Bryansk, Pskov. We need to cooperate more closely with our neighbors," the Belarusian head of state urged.

"It is almost impossible to separate us... No matter how politically we disunited, the Soviet Union collapsed, people realized that they had to live together," Lukashenko said. The President stressed that Belarusians and residents of the Smolensk region traditionally communicated closely and helped each other after the collapse of the USSR.

He noted that this is the fifth visit of the governor of the Smolensk region to Belarus, which indicates that the Russian Federation is committed to cooperation with Minsk in this region as well. "And in Smolensk they understand that we must be together, develop, help each other, especially in these difficult times," Lukashenko stressed.

Lukashenko urged Russian partners to move forward in the development of relations. At the same time, he stated that there is no inhibition in the relationship. "We do not have any braking and will not have any from Belarus. But the speed... The time is now that we need to turn on additional speeds," he said. The head of Belarus said that he had discussed with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the development of close ties between the border regions of the two countries.

"You know, we are always ready to lend a shoulder, even to the detriment of someone and our own interests, if necessary. We will continue to act in this way," Lukashenko said, promising any help and support to the Smolensk region.

He said that Minsk is ready to further intensify relations with the Russian Federation and its regions. He added that he knows about the position of the Russian president, that he supports it. "Full support and mutual understanding," the Belarusian president stressed.
