At Least 16 People Died from Earthquake in Albania
OREANDA-NEWS. The number of victims of the earthquake of magnitude 6.4 which occurred on the night of November 26 in Albania reached 16.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Albania reported about 13 dead and more than 600 injured people.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 kilometers northwest of the town of Shijak near the capital of the state Tirana. The earthquake centre was at a depth of 10 kilometers. Shocks were felt in Tirana, as well as in North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Croatia and some southern provinces of Italy.
As a result of the disaster, several buildings near Durres (second most populous city in the republic) were destroyed. At the moment, rescuers continue to dismantle the rubble. The rescuers come from Kosovo, Italy, Greece and other neighboring countries to search for people. According to Exit information portal, 41 people were saved by rescuers out of the rubble.
Albanian authorities announced the start of a fundraising campaign to help victims of an earthquake. This was reported on the official page of the country’s government on Twitter. “To help all the families affected by the earthquake, we opened several bank accounts (For transferring funds. – Ed.),” the report says. The authorities published the numbers of the accounts, urging citizens to make voluntary donations.
Many countries, including France, Greece, Italy and Germany, expressed their willingness to help Albania to deal with the consequences of the earthquake.
