OREANDA-NEWS In Iceland, the eruption of the Sundhnukur volcano near the city of Grindavik began. The evacuation of the nearby area has been announced, RUV TV and radio company reported, citing Einar Sven Jonsson, a representative of the Grindavik fire department.

The publication clarifies that the state of emergency was declared after 21:00 (0:00 Moscow time). According to Jonsson, the evacuation of the area has almost been completed. The exact number of people to be relocated is not known.

"Right now it doesn't look like Grindavik is in danger, but we can't say anything until the situation starts to stabilize," said Benedikt Ofeigsson, a spokesman for Iceland's meteorological service.

Ofeigsson added that the fault in the earth from which magma flows reaches 1.5 kilometers: the lava is moving at high speed. According to RUV, lava flows out at a speed of six kilometers per hour. An earthquake occurred in Reykjavik against the background of the eruption, but the exact connection between these events has not yet been established.

Earlier, a volcano began erupting on the Reykjavik Peninsula in Iceland for the second time this year. Footage has been published showing lava spills. The photos show that the eruption can be observed from afar by residents of the country located at different points.
