The President of Latvia calls for meeting the principles of international law in conflict resolution
OREANDA-NEWS President of Latvia Raimonds Vеjonis emphasised that conflicts in the world should be addressed peacefully based on the universally recognised principles of international law, including the principle of territorial integrity, when addressing the working session of the Fifth Global Baku Forum “The Future of International Relations” on Thursday.
The President of Latvia admitted that a number of conflicts became a challenge to the existing international order over the last couple of years. Europe, which has long been the benchmark for peace and prosperity, cannot feel protected against security challenges as well.
“In Europe, we face the serious threat posed by a rapidly changing security environment in the Euro-Atlantic space. We have seen how Russia is ready to change the existing borders of sovereign states by force. We have also experienced damage and loss of life caused by the spread of violent ideology, crime, corruption, poor governance, and infringements of human rights in many countries in the neighbouring regions of Europe in the Middle East and North Africa,” stated Raimonds Vеjonis.
The President of Latvia pointed out that the platform forged by the United Nations was the most appropriate place for resolving global conflicts. The UN-related regional organisations such as the European Union, the OSCE, the Arab League and the African Union have extensive capabilities to contribute actively to the promotion of political and economic reforms required for the development of corresponding regions.
“Resolving protracted conflicts in Europe and its neighbouring regions remain the most important priority. To that end, strong political will is needed,” said Raimonds Vеjonis.
