OREANDA-NEWS. In a month of violent and unrest protests in Iraq, 250 people died. Such data were released on Thursday by the country's parliament’s human rights committee, the Iraqi television channel reports. The number of victims exceeded 11 thousand. According to lawmakers, 2,500 Iraqis have been detained since the start of the protest movement, 500 of them are still in custody.

On Wednesday, the government’s High Commission for Human Rights announced that over the past week, 100 people have been killed in Iraq. At the same time, the Joint Operational Headquarters of the Army rejected any involvement of security forces in the killing of people, saying that members of criminal groups suspected of attacks on protesters were detained in several areas of Baghdad.

On October 1, anti-government protests against worsening living conditions, rising unemployment, and corruption in government agencies began in several regions of Iraq. According to official figures, the first wave of clashes claimed the lives of 157 people. After a brief lull last week, demonstrations and riots resumed in the capital as well as in a number of provinces in the central and southern parts of the country.
