Two Cargo Ships Collided in the Baltic Sea
OREANDA-NEWS. Two cargo ships collided in the Baltic Sea, one of them capsized. This was announced on Monday, December 13, by the Swedish public broadcasting company SVT. According to it, the incident occurred near the Swedish city of Ystad and the Danish island of Bornholm in the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea. One of the vessels is registered in Denmark, and the other is registered in the UK.
The exact number of people on board is being established, while only two crew members are known. Both are missing. A large-scale rescue operation has been launched. At 06:30 local time, dozens of boats from Sweden and Denmark were on site, and helicopters were barraging over the area.
According to the head of the press service of the Swedish Maritime Administration, Jonas Franzen, rescuers heard the screams of people in the water. The victims have not yet been found. The water temperature is 4 degrees Celsius, the air temperature is 5 degrees. At the beginning of the special operation, it was dark at the scene.
According to preliminary data, a Danish ship sank, the British team is involved in the search for people. The cause of the incident is being established. Earlier, on December 5, off the coast of Polish Gdansk, the Russian cargo ship Ruslana went off course and almost ran aground.
