OREANDA-NEWS. The United States will transfer about 2.5 thousand troops to Poland. This was announced on Wednesday, February 2, by the head of the National Security Bureau of Poland, Pavel Solokh.
“We rely on American soldiers, and such negotiations have been held. <...> We seem to have about 2.5 thousand additional soldiers, ”Solokh said on the air of the Polskie Radio radio station.
It is noted that there are currently about 5.5 thousand American soldiers in Poland.
“I want to remind you that there are two plans. One plan is the physical presence of American soldiers, including on Polish soil. The second plan is the introduction of a mechanism, the creation of opportunities for the transfer of significant numbers of troops, if such a need arose. Work is also underway here, ”concluded Solokh.
On January 29, US President Joe Biden announced the imminent deployment of US troops to Eastern Europe and other NATO countries. However, he clarified that there will be "not too many."
Earlier that day, Budapest received a request from Washington to deploy additional US troops on its soil. According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, this issue is now being considered in the country's defense ministry.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the backbone of American forces preparing to be sent to Eastern Europe would be elite airborne units. He noted that the Pentagon does not intend to publish a complete list of parts.
On January 26, CNN reported, citing sources, that the United States is discussing with allies the possibility of increasing the military contingent in the Eastern European countries of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) due to a hypothetical Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is noted that additional troops of the alliance can be deployed on the territory of Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. A final decision on this issue has not yet been made.
