Russian Railways asked to increase tariffs due to security costs

OREANDA-NEWS Russian Railways has asked the government to further increase the freight transportation tariff by 1% due to the costs of ensuring transport security. This was reported by Kommersant with reference to sources.
According to the publication, by the end of last year, the cost of transport security amounted to 45 billion rubles, which is more than twice the amount of funds within the indexation of the tariff by 1%. To ensure the safety of Russian Railways, among other things, attracts special forces to protect facilities.
The office of First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov forwarded questions to Russian Railways, the company declined to comment. At the end of July, the chairman of the Russian IC, Alexander Bastrykin, ruled out an increase in the number of sabotages and emergencies on the railways. "And today there are no objective grounds to say that the number of such crimes has increased," he said.
In mid-February, Vedomosti wrote that Russian Railways proposed to revise tariffs for 2024 and 2025 and set a target surcharge of 1% and 2%, respectively.
It is clarified that in 2022 tariffs were indexed to a record value for recent years: at the beginning of the year they were increased by 6.8%, and from June 1 — by an additional 11%. Since January 1, 2023, the Russian Railways tariff rate has increased by 8%, in 2024 it is planned to index by another 7.1%. And the surcharge for capital repairs in 2023-2025 will be 2, 7 and 7%, respectively.
