Russian Politician Proposed to Build a New Canal Instead of Suez
OREANDA-NEWS. Russian policeman, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Vladimir Zhirinovsky believes that the Suez Canal, which for several days was blocked by a grounded container ship, is not reliable and suggested starting the construction of a new canal - from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea.
Zhirinovsky wrote on his Twitter on Monday: “The next blockage of the Suez Canal proves its unreliability. Therefore, it would be better to build a canal from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea together with Iran. It would be good to receive dry cargo ships in Astrakhan, and then carry goods to Europe by rail ”.
The 400-meter container ship Ever Given ran aground last week at the 151st kilometer of the Suez Canal and blocked traffic on one of the world's busiest sea trade routes. On Monday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the operation to re-float the container ship had been successfully completed.
On the air of Sputnik radio, Anatoly Kuznetsov, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Morskie Vesti Rossii, expressed the opinion that such a development of events could have been foreseen.
Anatoly Kuznetsov said: “This could have been foreseen. There are strong winds, sandstorms, and if a ship almost half a kilometer long, loaded with containers tens of meters high, goes along a narrow waterway, then a good sail is obtained for the wind. And this sail worked. In many ways. what happened is the captain's fault, I think so. You know your ship, you understand the area of its loading and the resulting sailing. You just had to wait out this storm. Drop anchor and wait a day or two. But it never occurred to anyone, because there were would be a big loss for the ship owner - every day the freight costs crazy money. "
In his opinion, the incident will make adjustments to the rules of navigation on the Suez Canal.
