Russian Defense Ministry Demanded Millions from a Man Who Stole Equipment from "Doomsday Plane"
OREANDA-NEWS The Russian Defense Ministry has filed a lawsuit against a suspect in the theft of aviation equipment of the "Doomsday plane" - the Il-80 aircraft. The agency demands more than 2.7 million rubles from the man. The claim will be considered by the Taganrog City Court of the Rostov region, RIA "Novosti" reported.
Earlier it became known that the damage from the theft was estimated at more than 2.5 million rubles.
The suspect in the theft was detained in January 2021. It was a resident of Taganrog Zhora Khachunts. According to investigators, the man and his accomplice got on board the plane through the emergency door, dismantled the equipment for more than 2.5 million rubles and stole it.
"At the stage of the preliminary investigation, a civil claim for the amount of 2,712,891 rubles was filed from the Ministry of Defense against Khachunts. It will be considered in the framework of a criminal case," the representative of the court said.
A Russian general will go on trial for a 300 million scam.
The suspect also faces up to 10 years in prison. The theft from the ship became known in December 2020. It occurred at the Taganrog-Yuzhny airfield, where the aircraft was to undergo maintenance and planned modernization. IL-80 is called one of the most secret liners in Russia. It was created on the basis of the IL-86 and got its nickname, as it is designed to evacuate the country's top leadership and command troops in a nuclear war.
