Netherlands' Historic Bridge will be Dismantled Because of Bezos' Yacht
OREANDA-NEWS In the Netherlands, the 19th century "Koningshaven" bridge will be partially dismantled so that the new yacht of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos worth €430 million can pass along the river.
"Rijnmond" clarified that the shipbuilder "Oceano" appealed to the Rotterdam authorities with a request to partially dismantle the "Koningshaven" steel bridge. It is reported that the engineers did not calculate the height of the yacht under construction. Now, in order to send the boat to the customer, it is necessary to disassemble the central part of the bridge.
Despite the indignation of the Rotterdam historical community, the city municipality agreed to the request, noting that "this is the only way to the sea". Initially, one of the options was to partially build a yacht, and then tow it to another shipyard. However, the authorities decided that a more pragmatic solution would be to partially dismantle the bridge in order to transport the already built vessel.
The Rotterdam City Hall also recalled the economic benefits and jobs created during the construction of the boat. They also promised that "Koningshaven" will be restored in its current form. The bridge will be dismantled for only one day, but it will take several more weeks to prepare. Bezos has already stated that he and his company are ready to reimburse the Dutch for the costs of these works.
On February 1, it became known that "Amazon" bought more clean energy in 2021 than other organizations. Its share of the total number of purchased resources was 20 percent.
In January 2021, Bezos was accused of indifference to the environmental situation in the world. Residents of the UK felt that the billionaire should invest money in the fight against environmental problems, and not in space exploration.
