Cargo turnover of Russian ports has fallen

OREANDA-NEWS According to the results of the first nine months of 2024, the total cargo turnover of Russian ports fell by 3.5 percent compared to the same period in 2023 and decreased to 667.4 million tons. This is reported on the website of the Association of Commercial Seaports (ASOP).
During the reporting period, the volumes of transshipment of both dry and bulk cargoes decreased by 4 and 2.9 percent, respectively, to 332.4 and 335 million tons. In January-September, a total of 526.5 million tons of export (-3.2 percent) and 31.5 million tons of imported (plus 8.1 percent) cargo were overloaded, the association said. In addition, during this time, 50 million tons of transit (plus a percentage) and 59.3 million tons of coastal (minus 13.6 percent) cargo were transshipped in Russian ports.
In general, in the first nine months of 2024, a decrease in cargo turnover was recorded in most key Russian ports. Thus, the indicator of ports in the Arctic basin fell by 5.7 percent, to 69.4 million tons, the Azov-Black Sea — by 7.5 percent, to 209.4 million, the Far East — by 2.3 percent, to 175.9 million. During this time, the cargo turnover of the ports of the Baltic basin increased by a percentage, to 206.5 million tons, and the Caspian — by 9.3 percent, to 6.2 million, ASOP summarized.
At the beginning of 2024, the dynamics of the decline in cargo turnover of Russian ports was more rapid. Thus, by the end of January, the total volume of cargo transshipment decreased by 6.2 percent compared to the same period in 2023, to 71 million tons. In the first four months, the decline was 4.3 percent (to 288.4 million), and in the first half of the year — 3.1 percent (to 448.6 million).
