Belarus Created a Commission to Investigate the Landing of Ryanair
OREANDA-NEWS. A commission to investigate the situation with the landing of the Ryanair aircraft has been created in Belarus, the circumstances will be made public in the near future. This was stated by RIA Novosti on Monday in the aviation department of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the republic.
The Ryanair plane, flying from Athens to Vilnius, on Sunday urgently landed at the Minsk airport due to the message about mining, sappers arrived at the scene. The bomb was not found, and the Investigative Committee of Belarus announced the initiation of a criminal case on the fact of false reports of mining.
Human rights activists of Belarus reported that the founder of the Nexta Telegram channel recognized as extremist in Belarus and the chief editor of the Brain Belarus Telegram channel also recognized as extremist Roman Protasevich flew this plane, he was detained while checking documents at the Minsk airport. Protasevich was included in the republic on the list of those involved in terrorism. A criminal case was opened against him under several articles, including the article "organizing mass riots." He could face punishment up to 15 years in prison.
Today, May 24, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell called for an international investigation into the incident with the Ryanair plane landing in Minsk, as a result of which the founder of the Nexta Telegram channel Roman Protasevich was detained.
He called it "yet another blatant attempt by the Belarusian authorities to silence all voices of the opposition."
Borrell called for the immediate release of the journalist. According to him, the Belarusian authorities endangered the safety of passengers and crew.
He warned that "this situation will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the Council of Europe. The EU will consider the consequences of the incident, including taking action against those in charge."
