OREANDA-NEWS. May 16, 2016. An event co-organised by the United Nations and IRU on the benefits of a harmonised international regulatory framework on trade and transport has brought together more than 40 high level participants from developing countries around the world.

Igor Runov, who leads IRU’s work at the UN in New York, outlined the continued global expansion of the TIR system at the event, as well as implementation of enhanced risk management tools such as Real-Time Safe-TIR and TIR-EPD, and the introduction of eTIR.

The event was co-organised by IRU, the UN Office for the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and the UN Office of Legal Affairs (OLA). 

Gyan Chandra Acharya, Under Secretary General and High Representative, invited all UN member states to accede to relevant UN conventions on trade and transport facilitation, including the TIR Convention and the International Convention on the Harmonization of Frontier Control of Goods. 

This message was echoed by H.E. Christine Kalamwina, Chairperson of the UN Land-locked Developing Countries Group, who expressed her hope that member states would take the opportunity to sign these UN conventions at the upcoming UN Treaty Day in September 2016.
