A Law on Pedestrians was Adopted in Germany for the First Time
OREANDA-NEWS. For the residents and guests of the German capital local authorities will create a conditions for a safer and more comfortable walking around the city. To provide this opportunity and motivate people to walk more often, both for short and long distances, the parliament of the federal state of Berlin adopted at the end of January the first law for pedestrians in Germany.
It will be part of the road traffic law adopted in mid-2018, called the «Mobility Law» by the Berlin authorities. A law, that allows for greater consideration of the interests of bicyclists and encourages people to prefer cycling and local public transport rather, than driving around the city. And now, with the introduction of a new addition to this law, Berlin is taking another step towards this.
One of the tasks set by the new law is to significantly improve the landscaping of streets and parks during the construction and reconstruction, to increase the length of green public spaces and the number of public benches. It is also planned to increase the number of streets closed to car traffic and turn them into children's playgrounds and walking spaces for families with children. And in Berlin, there should be more areas for meetings and communication.
It is planned to do everything possible to ensure, that in Berlin pedestrians, including young children, the elderly and people with disabilities, have the opportunity to cross any, even a wide street for one phase of the green light of the traffic light.
