The Trial of the Attack on a Jewish Restaurant has Begun in Chemnitz

OREANDA-NEWS. On Wednesday, September 8, the trial on the case of the attack on the Jewish restaurant «Shalom» in 2018 began in the Chemnitz District Court. A 30-year-old resident of Lower Saxony is in the dock. The Dresden Prosecutor General's Office charged him with causing dangerous bodily harm, disturbing public order and damaging property.
On August 27, 2018, the accused, as part of a group of at least ten people, attacked the «Shalom» restaurant. Shouting anti-Semitic slogans, the attackers began to destroy the restaurant, throwing stones and bottles. The restaurateur himself was wounded in the shoulder.
The General Prosecutor's Office of Dresden proceeds from the fact that the crime was committed for right-wing extremist motives.
In 2020, 1,909 incidents of anti-Semitism were registered in Germany. Such data are contained in the annual report of the Federal Association of Centers for the Study and Collection of Information on Anti-Semitism (RIAS). At the same time, according to the report, more than a quarter of all registered cases were directly related to the coronavirus pandemic. RIAS refers to them insults and other materials of anti-Semitic content that were distributed at rallies against anti-Semitic measures, for example, in speeches of speakers or on posters and banners.
