The Russians Began to Go to the Shopping Centers Less Often After the Departure of Foreign Brands

OREANDA-NEWS Russians began to visit shopping centers on average 15% less, Dmitry Moskalenko, president of the Russian Council of Shopping Centers (RSTC), told TASS. He connects this with the departure of foreign brands, which, although they retain rental places, are already close to breaking contracts.
In early and mid-March, when Western brand stores began to announce temporary closures, traffic in the shopping center skyrocketed, queues formed at retail outlets. Later, attendance dropped significantly - about 15%, - said Moskalenko.
According to him, the rent includes a percentage of the turnover, so the owners of the shopping center suffer losses. Moskalenko noted that the percentage depends on the location of the site and the number of closed points in it.
The RSTC President also stated that non-foreign companies that have suspended their work in the Russian Federation have not yet terminated their lease contracts. He clarified that not everyone is ready to continue such a policy: Moskalenko said that "some companies have already come close to such a decision."
A significant number of foreign companies announced the suspension of their activities or the complete withdrawal from Russia in connection with the ongoing special operation in Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions of the leading economic powers of the world and their allies.
In particular, IKEA decided to suspend activities in Russia and Belarus. In addition, the largest clothing retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) froze sales in Russia. The suspension of activities in Russia was previously reported by Nike, Apple, Dell, Ford, BMW, Harley-Davidson and many other companies.
In response to the sanctions of foreign brands, in March the Russian government legalized the so-called parallel import, in which the delivery of goods is carried out without the permission of the copyright holder. It is assumed that this measure will satisfy consumer demand for imported goods that have left the Russian market. The measure involves the import of original goods through alternative supply channels.
