OREANDA-NEWS By the end of 2024, the consumption of animal protein in Russia reached the highest level in the history of statistical observations. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to data from the Rosselkhoznadzor Center for Industry Expertise.

We are talking about a record increase in the consumption of key food products, including meat, fish, milk and eggs. Last year, the figure per person in the Russian Federation reached 27.9 kilograms. Since 1999, experts noted, the value has increased by about 11.9 kilograms. At the end of the last century, the figure in the country was about 16 kilograms per capita, the CEE summarized.

The main driver of growth was meat consumption, which reached about 11.7 kilograms per person in 2024. This is followed by milk (11.33 kilograms), fish (2.86 kilograms) and eggs (2.02 kilograms). The largest increase in the reporting period was demonstrated by fish consumption, which increased by 129 percent compared to 1999, the analysts concluded.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin included a noticeable increase in consumption in the list of the main reasons for the rise in price of key food products in the country. At the same time, his data differed greatly from the statistics provided by the CEE. Thus, he noted that the annual volume of meat consumption in the Russian Federation has recently doubled and reached 80 kilograms per person, compared with the global average of 42 kilograms. According to him, the consumption of dairy products also showed a noticeable increase. The latter circumstance was one of the reasons for the sharp rise in the price of butter, Putin concluded.

Experts explain such dynamics primarily by a significant increase in the costs of domestic producers, logistical difficulties and an increase in the cost of food production. The situation with butter prices, which rose by an average of 33-34 percent in Russia in 2024, was influenced, in particular, by rising costs for packaging materials and imports of raw milk. Against this background, the average margin on these products in Russian stores reached 70 percent by mid-October, said Dmitry Leonov, deputy head of the Rusprodsoyuz association.
