OREANDA-NEWS. In the UK, due to a shortage of groceries in supermarkets, military personnel will be sent to deliver essential goods and medical supplies to stores in the country. This was reported by The Sun newspaper, citing government sources.

According to the publication, the COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a serious blow to the supply of goods to British stores. Due to the logistics crisis, supermarket shelves have been emptying in various parts of the country since the beginning of summer.

About 2,000 military drivers from the Royal Logistics Corps and other units are on high alert, the source said. “The soldiers will be accommodated in hotels where their assistance is needed and will work overtime to help cope with the crisis,” the source said, adding that they will deliver food, as well as other essential goods and medical supplies.

There are currently a shortage of 100,000 truck drivers in Britain. This happened due to the measures taken by the government to contain the coronavirus pandemic. 1.5 million Britons are forced to sit in quarantine, even if the test result is negative, if they have previously been in contact with an infected person. Millions of workers are now unable to do their jobs, leaving store shelves empty, pubs and restaurants closed, and no trains running.
