Lonely Island on creating YouTube and casting junk in 'Popstar'
No wait, just those two things.
Anyway, we met up with Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, the comic minds collectively known as The Lonely Island, to talk about their first feature film "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping", how they invented YouTube, and how they chose the perfect male nudity for the movie.
The Lonely Island made their name with a series of comic online shorts spinning off from "Saturday Night Live". Their musical misadventures include "I'm on a Boat", "Jack Sparrow" and "I Just Had Sex", so first we asked the boys to pick their favourite Lonely Island videos:
Having built their fame on online video beginning with the viral sensation "Lazy Sunday" in 2005, the Lonely Island can make some bold claims:
In "Popstar", Andy Samberg stars as Conner4Real, a pop star with millions of fans and almost as many people in his entourage. The mockumentary movie follows Conner having a tough time after his solo album flops and he faces the prospect of reuniting with his old boy band.
Sarah Silverman, Imogen Poots, Will Arnett and Joan Cusack are among Conner's crew, with "Saturday Night Live" alumni Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph and Will Forte also on board. The film is filled with comic cameos from a host of stars, including Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, DJ Khaled and Ringo Starr.
The trio wrote the movie, with Schaffer and Taccone directing Samberg. Judd Apatow produced "Popstar" and also makes a revealing appearance in the film:
"Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" is in theatres in the US now. It's expected in the UK and Australia in August. "I'm So Humble" and other songs from the movie are available to stream and download now.
