Minecraft surges past 100 million copies sold
OREANDA-NEWS. June 03, 2016. At only four and a half years old, Minecraft's popularity has been nothing short of staggering. The open-world, voxel-based game that has been described as "digital Lego" has now shot past 100 million copies sold, making it the second game in history to have done so, and the second best-selling single game of all time.
To be more precise, Minecraft has sold at least 106,859,714 copies, across all platforms, which includes the figures for PC and Java updated live on the Minecraft website. The mobile and console figures are not being released separately, but in all, as seen in the infographic below, the game is selling on average a massive 53,000 copies per day.
It still has a way to go before it tops the charts, though. Tetris is still in the lead, with around 70 million boxed copies of the original game and another jaw-dropping 425 million copies for mobile platforms as of 2014.
That's a challenge Minecraft is willing to take on. A representative said in an email, "We plan to continue to add new features and support our vibrant, creative community on a variety of platforms across the world!"
