Walmart Pay lands in 19 more states
OREANDA-NEWS. July 06, 2016. Walmart shoppers from Arizona to Maine to Washington can now use Walmart Pay to purchase items on the go.
The mobile payment service, as of last week in place in more than two-thirds of the states of the US, lets you use your smartphone to purchase products without the need to carry cash or a credit card. Its available through Walmart's mobile apps for iOS and Android.
Walmart Pay is one of a host of payment systems that work through your phone, similar to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay. The catch is that Walmart Pay is a proprietary system that operates only at Walmart stores. On the flip side, Walmart stores don't accept Apple Pay or other services.
Walmart had been aiming to make the service available across the nation during the first half of the year, but it missed that mark. On June 30, it announced that it had expanded Walmart Pay to 19 more states, bringing the total to 36. The latest states are Arizona, California, New Mexico, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Jersey, New York, Colorado and Ohio.
Still not part of the program are states including Florida, Minnesota and Nevada.
Walmart Pay is based on a QR code checkout system. That means you open the Walmart app during checkout and scan a code displayed at the register. An electronic receipt is sent to the app. Walmart is the only retailer with its own mobile payment service and supports all major credit and debit card as well as prepaid and Walmart gift cards.
Walmart did not respond to CNET's request for comment.
