Ukraine will Continue the War with Nord Stream 2
OREANDA-NEWS. Politico newspaper reported on July 21 that the United States allegedly called on Ukraine to stop criticizing the Nord Stream 2 project. However, Ukraine will continue to oppose the project, said Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Ukrainian president's office, in an interview with Radio Liberty.
"Ukraine is receiving various signals at various levels. And also at various levels, work continues in order to prevent the implementation of Nord Stream 2 in the form that the Russian leadership expects," Podolyak said. At the same time, Podolyak did not express criticism of the German leadership regarding the vision of the project. Meanwhile, the points of view of Germany and Russia on the project largely coincide: it is a commercial, not a political project.
At the same time, Germany strongly supports and promotes Nord Stream-2, which, if one follows the logic of Podolyak, violates jurisprudence, that is, European legislation.
Podolyak believes that the situation around the project can be clarified only after the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the United States, which will take place in August.
According to Politico, the US warned Ukraine that expressing opposition to the project could harm US-Ukraine relations. The newspaper's report may turn out to be an informational stuff, since a high-ranking US administration official did not confirm this information.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the United States will abandon its opposition to the gas pipeline project if Germany pledges to help Ukraine maintain the transit of Russian gas to Europe.
In turn, the Bloomberg agency reported that the United States and Germany are close to reaching an agreement that implies the possibility of Germany imposing sanctions against Russia if Germany considers that Russia is allegedly using energy resources as a lever of pressure on Ukraine.
