OREANDA-NEWS Ukraine does not intend to extend the transit agreement with Russia on gas, which expires at the end of 2024, in case of a request from Europe, it is ready to discuss the transit of gas from other suppliers through its gas transportation system, President Vladimir Zelensky said.
"No one will extend the agreement with Russia, that's the end of it. As for gas transit from other companies, if the request of some of our European colleagues continues, we will consider their request," Ukrainian media quoted Zelensky's statement at a press conference in Kiev on Tuesday.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced in late July that Baku is in the process of negotiations with the Russian Federation on the possibility of extending gas transit through Ukraine. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities and the EU have asked Azerbaijan to help extend the Russian-Ukrainian agreement, which expires this year.
Commenting on this statement, Alexey Chernyshov, Head of the Board of Naftogaz, noted that the EU and Ukraine are looking for ways to ensure sustainable gas supplies to Europe after the termination of the Ukrainian-Russian transit contract in 2024, one of them may be the supply of Azerbaijani gas.
The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, German Galushchenko, in turn, said in early August that so far no concrete proposals have been received from Azerbaijan, but they may be.
