OREANDA-NEWS Turkey and Russia continue to pay for gas in national currencies. The absence of obstacles to trade was stated by a source in the field of banking consulting in Ankara, as quoted by TASS
On November 21, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against BCS Bank, Centrocredit Bank and a number of other credit institutions, including the backbone Gazprombank, through which European countries paid for gas supplies.
According to a source in the Turkish banking industry, restrictions from the United States will not affect mutual trade with Russia.
"Trading in the Turkish lira-ruble pair between Turkey and Russia continues. There are opportunities for this, they are relevant. This is Emlak Kat l m bank. There are no difficulties there now, except for the amount of the commission. The same bank can also service gas transactions if the parties decide to do it through it," he explained.
At the same time, some experts from the energy sector of the republic warn that due to the situation with American sanctions, payment for gas transactions between Turkey and the Russian Federation may be delayed due to the situation with American sanctions against Gazprombank. The issue will depend on the rigidity of contractual obligations and the ability of the parties to agree. At the same time, analysts believe that Ankara and Moscow will find a way out of the current situation, although the delay is beneficial to the Turkish side.
Already on November 23, a number of Turkish credit institutions stopped servicing Russian cards of the Chinese UnionPay system issued by Gazprombank. When trying to withdraw money from an ATM, a warning is issued either about a technical error or that the card is not serviced by this bank.
