OREANDA-NEWS After the termination of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, the member states of the European Union (EU) have purchased a record amount of Russian LNG (liquefied natural gas). This was reported by Bloomberg.

It is noted that the volume of LNG supplied has already exceeded the figures recorded before January 1, 2025. In addition, Russia supplied a record 15.5 tons of LNG to the EU in 2024.

"Europe will still need gas, as all its efforts to wean itself off Russian gas have failed. It will probably eventually have to buy more Russian LNG to compensate for the drop in natural gas imports from Russia," said economist Tatiana Orlova.

On the morning of January 1, it became known that Gazprom had stopped supplying Russian gas through Ukraine, as the fuel transit agreement, which had been in effect since December 30, 2019, expired. Following this, the price of gas rose to its highest levels in more than a year on stock exchanges in Europe.
