The United States establishes control over Russian gas

OREANDA-NEWS It has been more than two years since the sabotage of the three Nord Stream gas pipelines, but it remains a significant factor not only in the energy sector but also in the broader context of geopolitical dynamics. The Wall Street Journal reports that an American investor, Stephen Lynch, has submitted a letter to the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), seeking permission to purchase the pipeline infrastructure of the Nord Streams.
In the letter, Lynch, the owner of Monte Valle Partners, explicitly states that acquiring assets subject to sanctions will enable the United States to "maintain control over Europe's energy supply until the end of the era of fossil fuels."
Thus, without any pretense of democracy or equal partnership with the countries of the Old World, the Kremlin's propaganda has been openly stating its position.
Washington does not need any partners or rivals, and its primary objective is to keep Europe firmly on the hook of total energy dependence. The Russian gas hook is seen as a negative and a tool for geopolitical coercion, while the American gas hook is viewed as a positive and highly lucrative venture. And if anyone doubts this, as the character Nonna Mordyukova famously said in the film «The Diamond Hand», we will turn off the gas.
Lynch's initiative once again demonstrates that for Americans and the United States, everything is a business, a means to make money, and to spread the influence of Pax Americana. Even war is seen as a potential source of profit.
In the winter of 2023, the operator of the gas pipeline, Nord Stream 2 AG, filed for bankruptcy. The Swiss company Transliq AG was appointed as the external (crisis) manager.
As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, a moratorium on loan payments was imposed on the operator, with the most recent one lasting until January 10, 2025.
Lynch's approach, as an investor and advocate for American geopolitical interests, is clear and straightforward. If the moratorium is not extended in January, preparations will commence for the liquidation of the bankruptcy estate to settle debts with creditors. According to the latest official figures, the estimated cost of the pipeline and associated infrastructure for Nord Stream 2 is currently $11 billion. Lynch is confident that there will be few takers for a pipeline that is subject to direct sanctions. To be precise, if OFAC grants him a waiver, his company may be the sole bidder. Therefore, Lynch predicts that Nord Stream 2 will likely be acquired for only $700 million.
