OREANDA-NEWS. Republican leader in the US Senate Mitch McConnell spoke about the promise of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to abandon Nord Stream 2, writes RIA Novosti.
According to the senator, Scholz confirmed that in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Nord Stream 2 project would not move forward. The Republican leader said Scholz made the promise at a dinner with McConnell in Washington.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden threatened to stop Nord Stream 2 at a press conference following talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on February 7. In turn, Scholz said that Germany and the United States act in the same vein, but never mentioned the name of the project and did not directly answer questions about it, including those raised in an interview with CNN.
Scholz said that Germany was preparing for costly steps against Russia in the event of its invasion of Ukraine. He said the country plans to act in unison with its allies. The politician also stressed Germany's readiness to discuss solutions with the United States.
“We are ready to take steps that incur costs for us. (...) There will be no difference in such a situation,” Scholz said.
Earlier, Scholz responded to accusations of an alliance with Russia. He called "absolute nonsense" statements that the FRG is rather an ally of Moscow than the West. “And everyone knows this,” he said.
