US parliamentarians are promoting the interests of American fuel corporations as opposed to the Nord Stream 2 project, and in general, the rise of a new wave of anti-Russian rhetoric in the US aims to aggravate the atmosphere before the meeting of the leaders of Russia and the US on June 16 in Geneva. This opinion was expressed on Wednesday by a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Sergei Zheleznyak.

Earlier, US Congressman Fred Keller (Republican from Pennsylvania) submitted to Congress a bill designed to immediately restore sanctions against Nord Stream 2, the Congressman's office said. The prospects for the adoption of the bill are unclear.

"The introduction by the US Congress of a draft on the immediate restoration of sanctions against companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 project is quite expected after a similar signal from the Russophobic lobby in the Senate. We also observe the continuation of the internal political struggle of ex-President Trump with the current US political elite, which are constantly in contradiction, thereby destabilizing the situation in society and in the external arena, "Zheleznyak told reporters.

He expressed confidence that the illegal US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 have nothing to do with energy security and independence of European countries. "It is obvious that the US parliamentarians who put forward the initiative are promoting the interests of American fuel corporations, which have failed to capture the European market. The US has no chance in a fair competition for the European consumer of energy resources. Therefore, the US traditionally uses methods of pressure and blackmail," the deputy said.

According to him, the US parliamentarians are ready to quarrel with the leading European player in the person of Berlin "for the sake of their own Russophobic ambitions and the profits from the supply of American liquefied gas to Europe."
