OREANDA-NEWS The call of European countries for Ukraine to resume transit of Russian gas through its territory will not work, says Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation and a leading analyst at the National Energy Security Fund.

"Ukraine will not resume anything from the appeals of [Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter] Szijjarto and anyone from Europe in general. We see that [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky has taken the path of severe escalation, he calls everyone dirty words — both the Russian leadership and, in fact, Slovakia and Hungary. He scolds them all, and in this regard, he is escalating, because he understands that he needs to escalate so that there are no agreements - now to negotiate on gas, then there will be agreements on the suspension of hostilities or some kind of peace agreement, he will be forced to do so," he explained. the analyst.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called on Kiev to continue the transit of Russian gas to Europe. "We have come to an agreement that the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine must be respected by both sides and that this agreement also provides for the preservation of energy transportation routes," the diplomat said. He also added that due to the shutdown of supplies, energy prices in Europe have increased by 20 percent.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico intends to discuss with representatives of the European Commission (EC) the suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukraine on January 9.

Since January 1, 2025, Gazprom has stopped supplying Russian gas through Ukraine. This happened due to the expiration of the five-year transit agreement, which the parties did not renew.
