OREANDA-NEWS. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner told reporters that the sanctions against energy imports from the Russian Federation will not be able to influence the Russian authorities, RIA Novosti reports.
“I assume that the energy boycott will not further restrict Russian activity against the background of the dramatic economic sanctions that we have adopted, but our resilience will be weakened many times over. Therefore, I share the position of the German Chancellor and the Minister of Economics that, even if this, of course, remains an option, this option should not be used,” he said.
The Minister stressed that the German Cabinet does not seek to boycott energy imports, although such an option is being discussed, but there are no concrete decisions yet.
“This is a sanction on which a decision has not yet been made. But each sanction must be checked to see if it will harm its own sustainability,” Lindner said.
Earlier, a spokesman for the German Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection said that the country was ready for a possible cessation of gas imports from Russia.
He stressed that Germany will be supplied with fuel in the "short and medium term." Also, the German Cabinet, according to a representative of the Ministry of Economy, is negotiating to strengthen its independence from the supply of Russian coal.
The representative of the ministry added that currently no sanctions have been imposed on exporters of Russian food products, all the existing difficulties are related to logistics.
Earlier, Markus Jerger, managing director of the association of small and medium-sized businesses in Germany, expressed fears that enterprises in the country could become bankrupt due to the rise in energy prices.
