OREANDA-NEWS The gas industry is one of the main ones in Russia, providing food security and participating in electricity generation, said Pavel Zavalny, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy, President of the Russian Gas Society.

"There is more gas in our country than gas," he began his speech at a commemorative event in honor of the 90th anniversary of Rem Vyakhirev, the first chairman of the Board of RAO Gazprom, a Soviet and Russian engineer who made an invaluable contribution to the development of the gas industry.

Gas is also food security, because it plays a significant role in the production of nitrogen fertilizers, Zavalny said. "And today we have reached the pace of rural capacity development thanks to these fertilizers," he continued, noting the growth in Russian grain exports. "Our country is 100% provided with food security, and 10-15 years ago the security was 60%," Zavalny added.

"Gas is the production of steel... We are the leaders in steel production. It is clear that gas is heat in homes, and we are a northern country... But gas is also light. About 60% of the country's electricity generation is generation," the speaker drew attention, specifying that 15% of humanity does not have access to electricity. "The level of energy consumption and its efficiency determine the level of development of the state, socio-economic development. The gas industry is one of the foundations of our country," he stressed.

"Those people who, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, participated in the creation of the gas industry, have special merits for the country. Rem Ivanovich Vyakhirev holds a special place in this story. Together with Viktor Stepanovich Chernomyrdin (in 1985-1989 he was the Minister of the Gas Industry of the USSR – ed.), they bore the main burden of developing gas fields and creating a unified gas supply system," Zavalny noted.
"Perhaps the greatest merit of Rem Ivanovich Vyakhirev is that they have kept the gas industry and the gas supply system united and indivisible," he added.
