OREANDA-NEWS In July, the European Union imported pipeline gas from Russia in the maximum volume since the end of winter last year, according to an analysis by RIA Novosti of Eurostat data.

In mid—summer, EU countries increased purchases of Russian pipeline gas by one and a half times compared to a year earlier - to 665.4 million euros. This was the highest figure since February last year, when imports amounted to just over a billion euros.

The main buyer was Italy, which increased purchases five times compared to last July, as a result, volumes reached the highest value since March of this year at 214 million euros. Hungary and Slovakia increased imports of Russian mainline gas by 21% over the year to 164.2 million and 115.8 million euros, respectively.

At the same time, Greece, on the contrary, reduced imports by 6% to 162.1 million euros, Bulgaria by 9.5% to 6.7 million, and the Czech Republic by half to 2.6 million. Austria traditionally does not disclose data on gas purchases.
In just seven months, the European Union purchased 3.95 billion euros worth of pipeline gas from Russia, which is 24% less than in the same period last year. At the same time, the association reduced purchases from other suppliers by 45%, to 17.3 billion euros. As a result, Russia's share of European pipeline gas imports increased to almost 19% from about 14% a year earlier.
Earlier, RIA Novosti found out that in July the European Union imported Russian liquefied natural gas for the maximum of 565.7 million euros since the end of winter.

In early September, Dmitry Birichevsky, director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told RIA Novosti that EU countries continue to increase purchases of Russian gas. According to the diplomat, by now the share of Russian gas in total EU imports reaches 15%.
