Syrian Authorities Intend to Demand Compensation for Oil Theft from the United States
OREANDA-NEWS. The President of Syria Bashar al-Assad said that authorities of the country would raise in the United Nations a question regarding the theft of Syrian oil and demand compensation from the United States of America.
At the same time, the politician described the UN as “a semi-state ruled by gangs based on the principle of force.” “Of course… you, I and many people in the world know that the UN does not exist, because there is no international law. […] Nowadays we live in a world similar to a forest, it is now closer to the world before World War II, but not after. Therefore, we will send complaints, but they will remain unsolved,” the Syrian leader added.
About 90 % of Syrian oil production is concentrated on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, which was formerly the stronghold and main source of income for the Islamic State terrorists, and now it is mainly controlled by Kurdish units of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) supported by the USA.
Pentagon Chief Spokesman Rath Hoffman assured that the profits from Syrian oil go to the SDF, and the US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said that the United States will protect oil fields and will combat attempts to seize them.
Official Damascus does not recognize the autonomous administration in northeastern Syria and the units of the SDF, and considers actions of Americans to be a theft.
Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that steps of Washington impede a settlement in Syria and create an “additional irritant” in the region. Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov noted that the United States wants to separate the territories on the eastern bank of the Euphrates and create a quasi-state there. According to the Ministry of Defense of Russia, the United States receives more than 30 million US dollars a month from oil production in Syria.
