OREANDA-NEWS Natural gas production in the Russian Federation in January 2025 amounted to 62.5 billion cubic meters, which is 4% less than in January 2024 (65.201 billion cubic meters m), Rosstat reported. At the same time, this result is significantly higher than in January 2023 (61 billion cubic meters).

The figure familiar to the industry consists of data published by the agency on the production of combustible natural gas ("natural gas" is primarily Gazprom) - 53.5 billion cubic meters (-4%), and associated petroleum gas ("natural gas from oil fields") - 9 billion cubic meters (-5%). APG production has been declining since mid-2024, as its production is linked to the dynamics of quotas under the OPEC+ agreements.

Gas production has a pronounced seasonal character, as gas is the main fuel for regulating seasonal irregularities in the fuel and energy complex. From the very beginning, the current heating season followed a warm trajectory (in October - one degree warmer than the climatic norm, in November - by two, in December - by three). In January, the average air temperature in the country (according to the "System Operator of the UES of Russia") exceeded the climatic norm by 6 degrees and by 7 degrees - last year's value.

The production of thermal power plants decreased by only 2% in January. At the same time, other types of generation had a deeper decrease (the output of nuclear power plants decreased by 5.1%, hydroelectric power plants decreased by 8.9%).

The output of gas-intensive products such as ammonia (which is also the basis for the production of nitrogen fertilizers) increased by 10.7% in January.

Since the beginning of 2025, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine has stopped in the export direction. Against this background, the use of the European branch of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline system has increased to the maximum possible level. Supplies to Turkey are at their maximum level, and shipments to China have increased as planned.

In 2021, Russia produced 763 billion cubic meters of gas, in 2022 - 676 billion cubic meters, in 2023 - 638 billion cubic meters. m and 685 billion cubic meters . m in 2024. In 2022-2023, the figures decreased significantly due to a reduction in supplies in the western direction. On the other hand, domestic consumption is growing, as well as exports to Asia.

According to the current medium-term macro forecast, gas production in Russia in 2025 is planned at the level of 695.4 billion cubic meters.
