Russia Tested World’s First Floating Nuclear Unit
OREANDA-NEWS. The press service of the Rosenergoatom (part of the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation,) has reported that the test of a nuclear plant at the world's first floating nuclear power-generating unit “Akademik Lomonosov” has been completed. Both reactor plants successfully reached full capacity. The test has confirmed the stable operation of the main and auxiliary equipment, as well as automatic process control systems.
Getting a license to operate a machine is planned in July 2019. By the end of the year, in Pevek, a Russian port town above the Arctic Circle, the construction of onshore and hydrotechnical facilities for the floating nuclear thermal power plant will be completed, as well as infrastructure, which will provide the transmission of electricity and heat energy to the town networks.
During the summer navigation, the unit is planned to be towed to the port of Pevek. It is expected that electricity from the floating nuclear power plant will be issued to the town in December 2019.
The head of Rosatom Andrey Petrov said that small nuclear power stations are able to become an epoch in atomic energy.
“Akademik Lomonosov” is the leading project of a series of mobile transportable power units of low capacity. It is a new class of energy sources based on Russian nuclear shipbuilding technologies. Floating units were designed to work in the Far North and the Far East, their main goal is to provide energy to remote industrial enterprises, port cities, as well as gas and oil platforms located in the open sea. The station is equipped with two units that are capable to generate electricity and heat energy enough for a city with a population of about one hundred thousand.
New station has been developed with a large margin of safety, which makes nuclear reactors invulnerable to tsunamis and other natural disasters.
