OREANDA-NEWS  On Friday, August 16, Russia increased the gas supply to GIS Suja to almost the maximum values of this year. This was stated by Gazprom's official representative Sergey Kupriyanov, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

Gas pumping is carried out in the volume confirmed by the Ukrainian side, he noted. At the same time, the application for supplies through GIS Sokhranovka was rejected by Kiev, the representative of the company added.

On Friday, volumes reached 42.4 million cubic meters, which corresponds to the usual levels of July and early August, Kupriyanov said. The maximum transit volume in 2024 is 42.5 million cubic meters.

Ukrainian transit of Russian gas now goes only through the gas measuring station (GIS) "Sudzha". Such supplies in 2023 accounted for about five percent of total consumption in the European Union, where Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Italy receive fuel from Russia.

On August 7, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine "went on the offensive to seize a section of the territory of the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region," said Valery Gerasimov, head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. The head of the city called the situation in Sudzha very tense.

According to Watler Boltz, an energy expert at the Baker McKenzie law firm, in the event of the seizure of the Suja GIS in the Kursk region and the termination of transit, gas prices in Europe could rise by 12 percent. The expert said that with such a development, gas could rise in price to 45 euros per megawatt hour and its cost could be fixed at this level for several weeks until European countries are convinced that they can receive gas from other sources.
